By declaring that the presidency is not a popularity contest GMA virtually admits that her acts do not necessarily reflect the approval of the governed, as is in effect in a dictatorship.  Democracy, in contrast with dictatorship, precisely contends that acts of the government must enjoy the consent of the governed. 

 

If President Arroyo’s actions no longer enjoy popular support, she, in effect, has lost the mandate of the sovereign people who are the source of government authority. She has forsaken democratic principles and is now acting as a dictator.
            Barely 20 years ago we demonstrated to the world the essence of democracy by launching the People Power Revolution that became a model for other distressed people. What has happened since?
